Weissport looks at medical marijuana dispensaries

Much like neighboring Lehighton Borough, Weissport Borough Council is considering an ordinance that would dictate where medical marijuana dispensaries could be located within the municipality.

Weissport’s solicitor, Greg Mousseau, gave council an ordinance Monday night and asked them to review it in the coming weeks.

“You need to get something on the books,” Mousseau told council. “If you don’t have language in your ordinance permitting this type of use somewhere, the applicant will come before the zoning hearing board and say we’ll go wherever we want.”

One thing protecting much of the municipality is that medical marijuana dispensaries can’t be located within 1,000 feet of a registered day care or school.

Behavioral Health Associates’ program, run out of 413 Bridge St., qualifies as a school, Mousseau said.

That fact could rule out the former Castle Grill restaurant in Lehighton, which had been discussed as a potential dispensary location.

In Weissport, Mousseau said, the ordinance will require coordination from council and the zoning hearing board.

“You’ll have to lay out maps where you want a business of this type to go should there be an applicant in the borough,” he told council.

Horror movie

Filmmaker Michael Fasciana has been in touch with council about filming a horror movie in Weissport in the next two or three months.

Mousseau said Monday he had sent a letter with multiple questions to Fasciana.

“We’re not trying to chase them out of town, but we want to make sure they have the proper insurance, they aren’t going to leave the town a mess and that people can still get to their homes if they need to shut streets down,” Mousseau said.

“If an emergency vehicle needs to get to an address here in town, we need to ensure it can do that.”

If the filming does come to fruition and police presence would be needed, Fasciana would cover the cost, council said.
