African penguin to visit painting class in Palmerton

Love 4 Art Studio will have a very special guest at Tuesday’s painting class, and you can be sure he will be dressed for the occasion.

The Palmerton studio will host a canvas penguin painting session featuring a real African penguin, courtesy of the Lehigh Valley Zoo, preceded by a one-hour presentation.

Love 4 Art’s Jennifer Lesher said that she came up with the idea while on vacation with her family.

After contacting the Lehigh Valley Zoo’s education department, she was able to plot out a course based on the theme of her favorite flightless bird.

“I love penguins, that’s why I really wanted to get him. They’re a favorite animal of people in general,” she said.

Native to the Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa, the African penguin stands around 2 feet tall, weighing between 5 and 10 pounds. African penguins have clean black and white markings and black dots on their chests, along with black feet and pointy beaks.

Running from 6 to 9 p.m., the session costs $50, which can be paid in person.

Children in attendance must be at least 5 years old. A portion of the ticket price will be contributed to the Lehigh Valley Zoo, and donations will also be accepted. Aside from taking home your own work of art, the experience itself will make for a great story, Lesher said.

“It’s so unique,” she said. “You can’t really go anywhere else and paint with a penguin.”

Love 4 Art Studio is located at 202 Delaware Ave., Suite 1.
