Family Promise to accept furniture donations Wednesday

Family Promise of Carbon County will be accepting donations through its furniture bank from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The furniture bank, located at the organization’s office at 167 S. Third St., Lehighton has been accepting a variety of small appliances and other household items including fans, pots and pans, beds and dressers on a monthly basis over the past year. Donations will benefit homeless families in the Carbon County area as they struggle to get back on their feet.

The nonprofit shelter program was formed in Carbon County in 2009 and has since provided families with a source of temporary shelter, meals and fellowship.

The goal of Family Promise is to fulfill the most basic needs of those without permanent housing in the area.

During the day, families can visit Family Promise as a means of shelter and thanks to the help of 26 local churches, families are able to obtain shelter throughout the night as well.

“It’s a really good program for the community,” said executive director, Jonathan M. Blackwell-Rodgers. “Many families that were helped by our program decide to lend a hand when they’re able to, he said. Not only does Family Promise aid families in need, they also educate, encourage and empower them so that they can be self-reliant once again.”
