State Park activities

The following activities are scheduled for Tuscarora or Locust Lake state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.

• On Thursday, naturalist Robin Tracey of Tuscarora will lead a hike to Wolf Creek Falls at 10 a.m. Participants will meet at the south end of the Walmart in Saint Clair. The hike is 7.5 miles and difficult. Registration is required by calling Tracey at 570-467-2506. Shine only.

This hike replaces the one scheduled for Swatara State Park Wildflowers which was scheduled for Thursday. That hike was canceled due to heavy flood damage at the park.

• On Saturday, Redcreek Wildlife Center’s Peggy Hentz will present a program on live animals that she has rehabilitated. Meet Gabriel the owl and other birds of prey. The program will begin at 6 p.m. in the Locust Lake Amphitheatre. The program is free. Shine only.

• Join the DCNR conservation volunteer “Pap” Knauss on the “Spirit of Tuscarora Trail” at 11 a.m. on Saturday to search for early summer wildflowers. The trail is 4.5 miles long and moderate in difficulty. The trail winds through several diverse habitats with a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Lake cove. Meet in the upper beach parking lot near the trail head and bring a lunch. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Shine only.

Road closure

Boat Cove Road, the road down to the boat launch in Tuscarora State Park, will be closed on July 11 to remove dead ash trees along the roadway. The road will be closed by the four-way stop sign so anyone with a trailer can go into the day use area to turn around. People can go to nearby Locust Lake State Park to boat. The road will be closed at sunset on July 10 so there will be no night boating or fishing that evening. For questions or further information, contact the park office at 570-467-2404.
