Pollinators at Burnside Plantation

National Pollinator Week was established by congress 11 years ago with the intent of spreading awareness and addressing our declining pollinator populations.

Penn State Extension master gardeners will be participating in this national initiative by hosting a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Historic Bethlehem’s Burnside Plantation, 1461 Schoenersville Road in Bethlehem.

The master gardeners have been maintaining a demonstration pollinator garden at the site that provides pollen and nectar flowers, host plants for caterpillars, water, nesting sites and shelter for pollinators.

During the Pollinator Week Celebration, they’ll be offering presentations on butterflies, bumblebees and the value of native plants.

You can stop at pollination stations for information and tips, tour the garden and test your pollinator knowledge with interactive displays.

They will have activities for kids, including a pollinator scavenger hunt, crafts and stickers, as well as free native plant seeds (while supplies last) and light refreshments.

All of us can take steps to support our native pollinators (birds, butterflies, bees) — even a few flowers in a container can help. This will be a great event to learn more about what you can do and have some fun while doing so.

The Pennsylvania State University encourages qualified persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities.
