5K to kick-start 25th annual Relay for Life Saturday

A (Where’s the Finish) 5K will be held before the 25th annual Relay for Life event on Saturday at Tamaqua Area High School.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. Children can participle in a free run/walk around the track as well. Awards will be given out to runners in different age groups along with the top five walkers. Proceeds of the 5K fundraiser will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

“We are excited to host this event. It’s a great opportunity to take to the track, whether you are looking for some friendly competition or to get some exercise. The most important part is the fact that we are raising money to help find a cure-and the finish line-for this deadly disease,” said Diane O’Donnell, chairwoman.

O’Donnell began her journey with Relay for Life by joining St. Luke’s Miner’s relay team. Since then her positive experiences with Relay for Life has inspired her to become more involved. She hopes for a good event turnout especially since this year marks her first 5K fundraiser.

Raffle tickets can be purchased to support the teams by helping them reach their donation goals. WTF 5K will also have a basket raffle, as well as food available at the concession stand. Volunteers are more than welcome to stop by on the morning of the event to help out as necessary.

O’Donnell encourages everyone to come out and support a great cause. Luminaria will also be available for purchase as a way to support a survivor or to remember a loved one that has passed away from cancer.

The Relay for Life will be one day this year instead of the 24-hour event held previously.
