Summerfest canceled

Due to road construction on West Broad Street in Tamaqua, the annual Summerfest Father’s Day celebration has been canceled.

The construction is scheduled to be completed in plenty of time for the Tamaqua Historical Society to hold its annual Heritage Day Festival in October.

Willing Park

The On the Grind Association will conduct its first Willing Park Community Carnival on Father’s Day weekend, June 16 and June 17.

Organizers say there will be rides, food, raffles, games and fun for the entire family.

All proceeds will benefit the revitalization of the parks’ playground and skate park.

The park is located behind Boyer’s Food Mart.

Sports camp

Revive Community Fellowship will be conducting free sports camps at two Tamaqua locations on June 18.

A morning session will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the South Ward Playground, located on Penn Street.

Later that day, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., the camps will be held at the Dutch Hill ball field, Columbia and Biddle streets.

There are no fees and the camps are open to the public.

Library programs

The Tamaqua Public Library has summer reading programs for all ages. Summer Quest 2018 has been divided into three age categories, all based on the there “Libraries Rock.”

There is a preschool program for children up to the age of 5. Participants will meet once a week for six weeks, beginning June 19. Sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

For readers between the ages of 6 and 12, the Summer Quest program will begin June 18. Sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. every Monday for six consecutive weeks.

The 2018 Young Adult Summer Reading program will be held every other Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., starting June 15. Topics for discussion will include Arthurian legend on June 15; Hamilton on June 29; comic history on July 13; music on July 27; mental health on Aug. 10; animé and manga on Aug. 24.

Chamber concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its 12th Annual Summer Concert Series on Thursday with Island Time Lite, featuring Jimmy Buffett-style summer music. The concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station. All events are weather permitting.

The entertainment will continue throughout the summer months, on select Thursdays. The rest of the schedule includes: June 21, Magic Stew, classic rock/jam; June 28, Six To Midnight, acoustic ’90s and classic rock; July 12, It Takes Two, top 40s and classic good-time oldies; July 19, Shellshocked Churchills, classic rock; July 26, Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats, hillbilly rock; Aug. 2, Buddy Musselman, classic rock and outlaw country; Aug. 9, The Fat Cats, rock ’n’ roll; Aug 16, Magic Stew, classic rock/jams; Aug. 23, The Bees Knees, ’60s rock and the British invasion bands; Aug. 30, Gene Morrison, oldies and the classics.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Tuesday, fundraising committee meets at 6:30 p.m., Preschool Board meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, Bible study session at 12:30 p.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. service this Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. Lisa Virno will provide special music in celebration of Father’s Day. Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Hope in the Mountains NFG meets every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Phillip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Father’s Day Sunday in Calvary United Methodist Church of the Lewistown Valley. The service will include pastor’s farewell message and special music.

Also on Sunday, a potluck luncheon will be held following the service. Contact Sue at 570-668-3359 concerning what food to bring; Blackwood Quartet will perform a gospel concert at 6:30 p.m. at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road.
