Carbon man admits to resisting arrest and firearms count

A Carbon County man pleaded guilty in the county court on Monday to resisting arrest and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon.

Jonathan Joel Tappan, 25, of Jim Thorpe, entered the pleas before Judge Steven R. Serfass for an incident that occurred on Oct. 20, 2016, in Jim Thorpe. Borough police responded to a report of a fight at a bar along Broadway. While looking for people involved in the fight, police came across Tappan, who they knew from prior contacts.

While speaking to him he became unruly and refused to respond to commands by the officers. It took substantial force to take him into custody, the police report indicated. A .380-caliber handgun was found on him. It was noted Tappan was not involved in the fight at the bar.

Serfass accepted the pleas but deferred sentencing. Tappan is currently an inmate in the county prison.
