Jury clears man in Tamaqua drug death

A  Schuylkill County jury has cleared Kyle J. Merenda on all counts in the drug death of Alex Sienkiewicz, a Tamaqua woman who died of an overdose.

John Seinkiewicz shouted as the verdicts were delivered. He said the jury was a farce.

His wife, Tammy, and others who accompanied the couple gasped and wept.

Prosecutors charged that Kyle J. Merenda sold Alex Sienkiewicz the fentanyl that killed her.

Merenda, 23, of Barnesville, was charged by trooper Joseph W. Hall of the Frackville barracks in the death of Sienkiewicz, a Tamaqua resident, on April 2, 2016.

He was charged with drug delivery resulting in death, delivery of a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of a controlled substance.

It is the first time in Schuylkill County that a person charged with drug delivery resulting in death has come to trial.

The jury began deliberating at 2 p.m. and returned the verdict just before 7 p.m.
