Man admits impersonating officer; breaking into room

A Washington County man admitted to kicking in a door at a Pocono hotel and identifying himself as an ATF officer in Carbon County court on Friday.

Michael John Grasty, 41, of Nottingham, pleaded guilty to one count each of impersonating a public servant and simple assault and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

He was charged by Kidder Township police for an incident on March 3 at the Pocono Resort Center, Lake Harmony.

According to the police report, Grasty kicked in a door to a room at the resort where there were four people inside. He identified himself as “ATF.” The report also indicated he had a handgun.

Grasty said it was a practical joke gone wrong. He said he thought he knew the people in the room but actually didn’t. The police report indicates that victims recognized Grasty, seeing him in the bar area and that he appeared intoxicated.

Grasty told Judge Joseph J. Matika, “I’m really sorry for what happened.”

Matika said this is the type of incident that you wake up the next morning and say to yourself, “What the hell did I just do?”

Matika placed Grasty on probation for 18 months and ordered him to write a letter of apology to the four victims individually, render 75 hours of community service, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation and have no contact with the victims other than the letter of apology.

The sentence was imposed on each count running concurrently.
