Coaldale to pay ex-chief: Official on disability since 2013 will get lump sum payment

Coaldale borough has agreed to a settlement with a former police chief who last worked for the borough in 2013.

Timothy Delaney went on disability leave after a training incident involving a malfunctioning stun gun.

The borough has agreed to withdraw its appeal before the state supreme court in exchange for Delaney accepting its settlement terms.

Under the terms of the settlement, Delaney is retired due to disability. He had been paid $53,000 per year from when he retired at least through 2015.

Starting Friday, the borough will pay Delaney a disability pension, the amount of which will be determined by its pension plan consultant and ordinance.

The borough will pay Delaney a lump sum totaling 12 months worth of disability benefit for the time that has passed since he stopped working as chief. If the case went to arbitration, Delaney could have been awarded more.

Council voted at its May meeting to approve the settlement. Councilwoman Claire Remington quoted Martin Luther King Jr. to express her gratitude that the case was settled.

“That’s just the way I feel. Now we can start anew for real,” she said.
