Capparell, Geisinger looking for repeat medals

Times News athletes picked up six medals at last year’s PIAA State Track and Field Championships.

Over the next two days, the 2018 PIAA Championships will be taking place — and two of those medal winners from a year ago will be back to try and repeat last year’s success.

Marian’s Tina Capparell placed sixth in the Class 2A 1600 to earn her first state medal. Capparell qualified this year in both the 800 and 1600 meter runs.

Jim Thorpe’s Jarrin Geisinger, running for Marian last season, placed seventh in the Class 2A 100. Geisinger returns in the Class 3A 100.

The other area winners a year ago were Tamaqua’s Monika Shimko, Pleasant Valley’s Mike Mitchell, Lehighton’s Aaron Bowman and Northern Lehigh’s Jillian Olewine.

In the final race of a decorated high school career, Shimko ran to a fourth-place finish in the Class 2A 800. It was her fourth appearance at the PIAA Championships.

Mitchell got a fifth-place finish in the Class 3A triple jump

Bowman set a personal best – and tied the school record – clearing 14-0 in the Class 2A pole vault. The mark helped the senior place fifth in his first trip to states.

Olewine placed eighth in the Class 2A long jump with a mark of 17-3.

This year, the area will be represented by five relay teams and 26 different individuals, with Cappell, Lehighton’s Tahmir Spencer, Palmerton’s Jake Martinez and Jim Thorpe’s William Munson all qualifying in two events.

The following is a list of Times News area state qualifiers, with their events, the number of individuals or teams in that event, their seed and their qualifying time/distance.
