Good old days

The Tamaqua Ministerial Association and Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network will sponsor a workshop on the “Myth of the Good Old Days” on June 2 at Bethany Evangelical Congregation Church. Guest speaker will be Dr. Jill Peters, a member of the faculty at Moravian seminary in Bethlehem.

The workshop is designed for lay leaders and clergy as it focuses on church leadership.

There is no fee, but registration is required, with a deadline of May 30.

Hometown auxiliary

The Hometown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. June 4, at Basile’s Restaurant on Route 309. The meeting will be followed by a white elephant bingo.

Cressona Band

The Cressona Band has three upcoming concerts in the Tamaqua area this season.

A patriotic concert, in honor of the 150th observance of Memorial Day, will be held at 7 p.m. May 23, at the Tamaqua Train Station.

On July 15, the band, and junior band, will travel to Heisler’s Dairy Bar for a concert in the country. The concert will begin at 4 p.m.

The annual concert at the East End Playground is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 25. This concert will serve as a tribute to the late Sheldon Shafer, a longtime band member.

Dog walk

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue’s 11th Annual Dog Walk and Chinese Auction, postponed last weekend due to potential rainy weather, will be held Saturday at the Owl Creek Reservoir.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with the walk scheduled to begin at noon. Everyone is welcome, with or without a pet.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met May 17 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 46 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session. Vice President Nancy Gerber opened the meeting with the invocation “God Is Always With Us.”

Norma Baker and Joe Bednarik were added to the sick list.

This week’s meeting will include a memorial service for five members who passed away during the last year, followed by a pizza party.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.

Zion Stone Church

Zion’s Stone Church in West Penn Township will conduct a Community Vacation Bible School the week of June 11.

The theme will be “Shipwrecked.”

Hours will be from 6:30 to 9:10 p.m. and the VBS is open to children between the age of 3 and those who have completed fifth grade.

Calvary Lewistown

This Sunday will feature a combined Memorial service, at 10:30 a.m., in Zion’s Church of the Lewistown Valley.

The service will also include prayers at the cemetery and will be followed by a covered-dish luncheon. Special music will be provided by the combined choir.

A prayer meeting will be held at Calvary at 7 p.m. on June 1.

Graduate recognition will be held on June 3.

The Blackwood Quartet will appear in concert on June 17 at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.
