Therapeutic horseback riding center to hold open house

Horses & Horizons Therapeutic Learning Center Inc. will hold an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. June 3 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its founding as a registered nonprofit organization. Since 1993, HHTLC has provided a safe and effective program of therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities.

This special event will feature free carriage rides, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, children’s activities and door prizes. There will be a showing of the documentary “Horses & Horizons, a Journey of Hope and Resiliency” at 2 p.m. Several of the center’s riders will participate in demonstration lessons beginning at 3 p.m. There is an indoor riding arena, so the event will be held rain or shine.

The open house will be a celebration of the learning center’s longevity. It also is intended to introduce prospective volunteers and riders, health care professionals and the general public to the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding.

Harvey and Elaine Smith’s Helping Horse Farm is home to HHTLC. It is located 10 miles south of Tamaqua at 375 Zion’s Stone Church Road, just off Route 309.

Harvey Smith, a retired occupational therapist, is HHTLC’s executive director. His wife, Elaine, is the program director. They both are lesson instructors certified by PATH International and the Council on Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship.

Instructors, riders, volunteers and parents of some of the riders will be on hand to answer questions. Food will be available for purchase. There is no charge for admission.

HHTLC serves children and adults with disabilities.

HHTLC holds lessons on Monday and Wednesday evenings from May through October. It currently is in need of volunteers for its second eight-week session of lessons, which is scheduled to begin on July 9.

There is a required training session for new volunteers from 1 to 5 p.m. June 23. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, enrolling a rider, or for more information about HHTLC and the upcoming open house, can contact Elaine Smith at 570-386-5679 or elshhtlc1@gmail.com.
