May 18, 1971 — Lehighton’s Dave Long sets a new school record in winning the high jump at the first “Meet of Champions” at Lehigh University. Long clears 6-4 at the event, which pits the top two finishers from each league meet (East Penn, Lehigh Valley and Lehigh-Northampton) against each other. Slatington’s Dave Gower captures the 220 in a time of 22.7 and also takes second in the 100. Other area athletes to place in the top three include Lehighton’s Herb Gasker (second, discus), Kevin Seltzer (second, triple jump; third, high jump) and Ron Semmel (second, pole vault), and Palmerton’s John Perich (third, pole vault) and Rich Behler (third, 880).
