Farmers market returns to downtown Lehighton

Customers with an appetite for fresh produce are once again in luck.

Back by popular demand, the Lehighton Downtown Initiative will host its second annual Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market.

Opening day is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the borough’s lower park, and will include a handmade-only craft show.

Special music will be provided by Damian Walck during the morning hours, with afternoon music to be announced, according to Bambi Elsasser, treasurer of the LDI.

“The Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market is a producer goods only market, which means everything sold there is either homegrown, homemade or handmade,” Elsasser said. “Live music will be accompanying all of our farmers and vendors each week.”

Elsasser said that throughout the season, other special events will be occurring during the farmers market, including everyone’s favorite, Christmas in July on July 28.

“Our normal farmers and vendors will be there, as well as more crafters, small businesses, specialty foods and music,” she said. “Other fun events will be scheduled throughout the market season, so please stay tuned.”

Elsasser encouraged others to follow the Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market on Facebook for all the up-to-date events and weekly notifications on what to look forward to at the market each week.

The Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 6, with the exception of opening day and Christmas in July, which will run from 9-3.

The Lehighton Downtown Initiative is a nonprofit group of volunteers working on revitalizing the Lehighton Downtown and surrounding areas.

As a group, Elsasser said it offers monthly free movies in the park during the summer months starting at dusk this Friday at the amphitheater.

Elsasser said its large event, RockToberfest will be held Oct. 13-14 to benefit breast cancer awareness.

“We currently have taken the lead and are in the process of making Lehighton a Trail Town,” she said.
