Severe storm downs wires, trees; possible tornado in Mount Pocono

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m. for Carbon and Monroe counties.

Dispatchers are reporting trees and wires down at sites around the county. Drivers may want to avoid the following areas:

-3rd and Lafayette streets, Palmerton

-North Shore Drive and Twin Lake Road, Indian Mountain Lake

-Lentz Trail

-Jim Thorpe Market

-Lehigh Street, Tamaqua

-Eurana Park, Weatherly

-Buck Mountain Road

-Holiday Drive, Albrightsville

According to the Monroe County Control Center, a possible tornado touched down in the Mount Pocono area.

Weatherly School buses are running late due to the severe weather.

In Monroe County, Jonas Road is closed.

More than 80,000 people in the PPL area are without electricity. PPL reports more than 19,000 people without power in Monroe County, 3,686 in Carbon County, 1,228 in Lehigh County and 745 in Schuylkill County, as of 4:10 p.m. Overall 78,000 are without power.

Walmart in Mahoning Township is without electricity.

In addition to large hail and damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
