Local organizations are in need of volunteers

Editor’s note: The Times News frequently publishes a list of organizations looking for volunteers. We’ve included the list today in case you’re ready to seek an opportunity.

Feed the People

Feed the People, a nonprofit organization, serves free community dinners the third Wednesday of every month. Volunteers help with decorations for holidays, setting tables, distributing dessert and drinks, and cleaning up at the end of the day. May help with distributing/posting fliers. During special holidays they may help with table service. For information, call 570-657-1480.

Garden of Giving

The Garden of Giving needs volunteers for the 2018 seasonal vegetable seedling planting the weekend of May 19-20, 9 a.m. to noon. What a great opportunity to serve your community and help feed those in need. The garden is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization which grows high-quality produce and eggs which are donated to local food banks and soup kitchens of Monroe County. Kunkletown Thrift Store

The Kunkletown Thrift Store located inside of the Eldred Township Community Center of 516 Kunkletown Road, needs helpers primarily to sort through donations that come in on a daily basis, price, clean (if necessary) and put them in their designated areas, there are also a few other small/easy tasks. Must be at least 15 years of age, lift more than 5 pounds, and have their own transportation. If any interest please contact Heidi or Donna at the center 610-895-4444, or feel free to stop in during business hours.

Children’s story hour

Eldred Township is beginning a Children’s Story Hour program and several volunteers are needed to read to the children. Hours are flexible. Candidates will need a Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check and a Child Abuse Clearance, both available at http://www.psp.pa.gov/Pages/Request-a-Criminal-History-Record.aspx.

Children’s books are being accepted to be used for the program.

St. Luke’s Miners Campus

St. Luke’s Miners Campus is looking for volunteers to help make a difference with patients in the Skilled Nursing Unit, Inpatient Nursing or Emergency Department by spending time socializing, providing comfort items and assisting staff with various supportive duties.

Horses & Horizons

Horses & Horizons Therapeutic Learning Center Inc. is looking for volunteers to help with its program of therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with special needs. The registered nonprofit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers, is located 10 miles south of Tamaqua near Route 309. It offers therapeutic riding lessons on Monday and Wednesday evenings from the end of April through October.

Lesson volunteers need to be at least 14 years old, in good health, and able to walk for an hour at a time. They must successfully complete the volunteer training session. While experience with horses and/or people with disabilities is helpful, it’s not necessary. Volunteer assistance of professionals in the allied health fields of physical, occupational and speech therapy are also needed, as well as people with horse experience to lead horses, as well as people to assist participants during riding lessons.

In addition to lesson volunteers, the center also needs people to assist with grounds maintenance, cleaning saddles and bridles, and fundraising. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact Jane Ostroski at 610-298-2546 or jeohhtlc15@gmail.com.

Carbon Veterans Treatment Court

The Carbon County Veterans Affairs office is looking for volunteer mentors for the Veterans Treatment Court.

Mentors serve as sponsors to veterans in trouble with the law due to addiction and other issues.

Mentors must be either male or female veterans, preferably having served in combat but not required, who are willing to assist the person by appearing at court appearances with them, spending some time outside the courts and being available to talk or visit the veteran when needed.

A variety of veterans are needed for the mentor program because participants can range anywhere from someone who was deployed recently to someone who served in combat decades ago.

Carbon medical van

The Carbon County Veterans Affairs office is in need of volunteer drivers for its Disabled American Veterans van service.

The van transports veterans to the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.
