Elementary concert

The Tamaqua Area School District will hold its annual elementary and middle school band concert tonight. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Tamaqua Area School District Auditorium.

The students will perform “Musical Mix,” “Marvelous Musical Traditions,” Marvelous Music Part 2,” “This Old Man Goes Marching,” “Attack of the Slide Trombones,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Castles and Kings,” “Attack of the Garden Gnomes,” “The Hanging Tree,” “Arrival at Normandy,” “Creepy Crawlies” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

The bands are under the direction of Marsha L. Rodgers.

Admission is free.

Cressona Band

The Cressona Band has three upcoming concerts in the Tamaqua area this season.

A patriotic concert, in honor of the 150th observance of Memorial Day, will be held at 7 p.m. May 23, at the Tamaqua Train Station.

On July 15, the band, and junior band, will travel to Heisler’s Dairy Bar for a concert in the country. The concert will begin at 4 p.m.

The annual concert at the East End Playground is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 25. This concert will serve as a tribute to the late Sheldon Shafer, a long time band member.

Garden hot line

Penn State Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County have established a Horticulture Hotline for county residents with questions about their lawns, landscapes and gardens. The hotline is staffed entirely by volunteers and will be open, Mondays and Wednesdays from now until October. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The master gardeners have an office at the Schuylkill County Cooperative Extension Office, 1202 Ag Center Drive, Pottsville, but are also available by phone, 570-622-4225, or by email at schuylkillmg@psu.edu.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, junior choir rehearses at 11 a.m., Confirmation class will meet at 11:15 a.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: cherub choir meets at 6:30 p.m., senior choir rehearsal will be at 7 p.m., band rehearsal for Memorial Day will be at 7 p.m. at Zion’s Stone Church.

May 20 is Confirmation day.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include recognition of the chancel and angel choirs.

Also on Sunday, bells will rehearse at 8 a.m., Confirmation walk through and Sunday school classes are at 10:30 a.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, learning ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, shepherd choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., property committee meets at 7 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

A special mother’s brunch will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Bible study sessions are held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include a special Mother’s Day celebration.

Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Hope in the Mountains NFG is held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday.
