Tamaqua news for May 9, 2018

Hunger walk

Tamaqua’s 2018 Hunger Walk was postponed from May 6 to May 20 due to weather. The approximately 1-mile walk will begin at 2 p.m., in the area of the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The walk is the final step in Tamaqua’s Hunger Weekend, a combined effort of the Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership. It is designed to benefit Tamaqua’s three food pantries: Primitive Methodist Church, Trinity United Church of Christ and the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Schuylkill Democrats

The Eastern Schuylkill Democratic Club welcomes members from the eastern side of Schuylkill County, which includes the boroughs of Coaldale, McAdoo, New Ringgold and Tamaqua, as well as the townships of Rush, Schuylkill, Walker and West Penn.

The April meeting included a debate between the three Democratic candidates for the U.S. 9th Congressional District, which was held at the Tamaqua BPO Elks Lodge.

The club usually meets the fourth Monday of each month, although the next meeting will be held May 21 due to the Memorial Day holiday. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Elks.

New members are always welcome.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met May 3 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 52 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Springtime Melody.”

Joan Wall was added to the sick list.

Guest speaker Theresa Gaffney, Schuylkill County Register of Wills, was the guest speaker.

Upcoming dates to remember are: May 15, Election Day; May 18, trip to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre; May 24, memorial service.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Hope in the Mountains NFG will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday.

The board of trustees will meet at 7 p.m. on May 9.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Philip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include special music by Allie Gerber.

Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

An Ascension Day services will be held at 7:15 p.m. on May 10 at Steigerwalt’s Church of God in McKeansburg. The Rev. Jim Williams will be the speaker.
