Local Sports Roundup: Results from May 5-6

Pleasant Valley’s baseball team clinched a District 11 playoff berth with a win over Nazareth on Saturday.

The Bears also picked up victories in softball and girls lacrosse.

In other weekend action, Weatherly knocked off Panther Valley in baseball, while Marian and Palmerton gained softball wins.

BASEBALL

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley used a big fifth inning to earn a 6-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Nazareth.

Locked in a 1-1 tie, the Bears (10-7) exploded for five runs in the decisive fifth to earn the victory and clinch a District 11 playoff berth.

Nick Gattuso had two hits, a run and an RBI for PV, while Brent Beck added a double and knocked in a pair of runs. Evan Bond also scored two runs. Danny McEvoy earned the pitching win, tossing three scoreless innings.

Saucon Valley-No. Lehigh

Saucon Valley’s offense proved to be too much for Northern Lehigh, as the Panthers cruised to a 20-4 Colonial League win.

Kyle Petsch led Saucon with three hits and six RBIs, while Kevin Schoch finished with three hits, two RBIs and five runs scored.

For the Bulldogs (4-13; 4-12), Aaron Rudolph was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Gio Colon added two hits and an RBI, while Brandon Hess contributed a hit and two runs. Caleb Wanamaker chipped in with a hit and knocked in two runs.

Panther Valley-Weatherly

A four-hit game from Jeremy Moser helped Weatherly post an 11-5 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

The Wreckers (5-8; 4-7) took the lead with a four-run fourth inning and pulled away with a five-run sixth frame.

Steph Yurchak drilled a three-run homer in the sixth.

The Panthers (7-7; 4-7) received four hits from Brad Buzzard, while Jon Hafer and Mason Goida each finished with two.

Jim Thorpe-No. Schuylkill

North Schuylkill cruised to a 15-0 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

The Spartans’ Jake Green threw a four-inning no-hitter, walking two and striking out 10.

Mike Little had three hits for the winners, while Reggie Crawford and Max Schally each hit home runs.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 3-13 overall, 2-7 in the league.

SOFTBALL

Marian-Schuylkill Valley

Schuylkill Valley defeated Marian 8-1 in a non-league contest.

The winners were paced by Kendra Zimmerman’s three hits, while Carly Fogelman and Cassandra Miller both added two.

For the Fillies (9-7), Reese Erbe had three hits. Mia Nemeth and Macy Alansky each contributed two.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Lexi Merkel pitched a three-inning no-hitter, as Palmerton pounded Catasauqua in Colonial League action, 17-0.

Paige Shupp had two hits, one a homer, for the Blue Bombers. Madison Finley also homered and knocked in five runs.

Palmerton is now 11-6 on the season, 10-6 in CL play.

Jim Thorpe-No. Schuylkill

Joslin Stitzer collected three hits and knocked in three runs to help power North Schuylkill to a 15-0 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.

Winning pitcher Haley Burd allowed just one hit in her three innings of work, and helped her own cause with two RBIs.

Sam Sterner had the only hit for the Olympians (0-18; 0-12).

ES South-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley scored four runs in the fifth inning to break a tie and eventually earn a 7-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over East Stroudsburg South.

Deslyn Beade led the Bears (7-10), going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Grace Vento added a hit and knocked in two runs.

The Cavaliers received two hits and an RBI from Ashley King.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Vy.-Lake Lehman

Julianna Lopez had seven goals to lead Pleasant Valley to a 15-9 non-league victory over Lake Lehman.

The Bears (9-7) also received four goals from Savannah Bauman, while Alyssa Grieco added three goals and four assists.

Alyssa Lopez chipped in with a goal and an assist.
