Early morning fire breaks out in Tamaqua

A malfunctioning space heater was the cause of an early morning fire in Tamaqua today, according to Tamaqua Fire Chief James Connely.

All four of Tamaqua’s volunteer fire companies responded to the 3:08 a.m. alarm at 302 Race St. to find flames coming from the first floor living room. The building is a triplex, including homes at 300 and 304 Race St. All three properties are insured by their owners, Peter Papas who owns 300 and 302, and Elizabeth Baddick, who owns 304.

Connely said the home at 304 Race sustained only smoke damage; 300 had smoke damage and broken windows; 302 had fire, smoke and water damage as well as broken windows.

The fire was declared out at 3:45 a.m.

Also assisting were personnel from the Coaldale Fire Company, Tamaqua EMS, Tamaqua Rescue Squad and Tamaqua Police.
