Marian's Fritz, Panther Valley's Figueroa named all-state

Marian's Tyler Fritz and Panther Valley's Rene Figueroa were honored when the The Pennsylvania's Sports Writers All-State Boys' Basketball Teams were released Tuesday.

Fritz, the Times News Boys Basketball Player of the Year, garnered Class 2A Second Team honors. The sophomore was the area's leading scorer this past season, averaging 23.64 points-per-game, the most by an area boys' player since Jim Thorpe's Walter Johnson scored 24.64 ppg. in the 2002-03 season.

In addition to his scoring prowess, Fritz also averaged 5.36 rebounds-per-game, while also dishing out 61 assists and recording 27 steals for the Colts. An excellent free throw shooter, Fritz went 149-of-186 from the line, good for an .801 percentage.

Figueroa was named to the Class 2A Third Team. The junior scored an area-best 44 points in a single game on two occasions - against Weatherly on Dec. 19 and again against Marian on Feb. 9. Figueroa finished the season averaging 18.64 ppg., a mark that was second-best in the area.

After averaging 11.75 ppg. as a freshman, Figueroa has steadily improved his scoring output, reaching 13.60 as a sophomore before upping the total to 18.64 this season.

Figueroa also averaged 4.88 rebound-per-game and 4.36 assists-per-contest, to help the Panthers go 16-10 and advance to a district championship game and the state playoffs.
