Montgomery County man admits to thefts, fleeing police

A Montgomery County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Monday to three counts of retail theft and one count of flight to avoid apprehension.

Luis Joe Melendez Perez, 33, of Norristown, entered the pleas before Judge Joseph J. Matika. He was charged by Mahoning Township police with entering the Walmart store on three occasions, May 18, 20 and 25, 2017, and removing items, mostly cans of baby formula. The flight to avoid apprehension, which is rated a felony 3, occurred on May 29 at Walmart.

Township police responded to the store when security personnel related that Perez was in the store with another man. Police had been looking for him for the prior theft incidents in which he was caught on store surveillance.

Perez fled the scene in a vehicle when confronted by police. He was later apprehended.

Perez is currently an inmate in the Montgomery County prison on other charges.

Matika deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
