Weissport man admits to assault, damaging police cruiser

A Weissport man admitted to an assault count, damaging a police cruiser and threatening a police officer on Monday in Carbon County court.

He enter the guilty plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Austin Ray McBride, 23, pleaded to one count each of simple assault, terroristic threats and institutional vandalism for an incident in Franklin Township on Jan. 9. Township police responded to a reported domestic incident along Main Road. On scene a female victim told police that McBride, a former boyfriend, had assaulted her.

Police took McBride into custody. While in the police cruiser McBride began kicking the interior of the vehicle, causing damages. He also threatened the arresting officer, Frank W. Buonaiuto.

In another case, he pleaded to one count of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. He was arrested by Mahoning Township police on June 5, 2016, along Mill Road.

Serfass accepted the pleas but had to defer sentencing because McBride, who is an inmate in the county prison on the charges, needs to get a drug and alcohol evaluation for the DUI charge.
