A Schuylkill County man is dead after a one-car crash Sunday morning in West Penn Township.

The crash occurred at 6 a.m. as the vehicle was traveling south about a quarter mile south of the South Tamaqua intersection.

One occupant, Matthew Fannock, 21, of Andreas, was killed in the crash.

Fannock was a front-seat passenger.

Fannock was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky at 7:10 a.m.

Truskowsky said the crash occurred when the vehicle was heading south on Route 309 just past the Leiby’s intersection when it went into the northbound lane and hit a small tree, flipping several times before coming to rest in the shoulder.

Schuylkill County Coroner David Moylan said Fannock’s cause of death was blunt-force trauma.

Another occupant of the car was flown from the scene to an area trauma center.

Moylan said a virtual autopsy was scheduled to be performed at 6:15 p.m. today.

West Penn Township police were assisted at the scene by a state police reconstruction team from the Schuylkill Haven barracks, as well as the West Penn Fire Company No. 1.
