Tower City man killed in Schuylkill crash

A Tower City man died in a one-vehicle crash at 6:49 a.m. Sunday on Dietrich Avenue in Porter Township, Schuylkill County.

Joshua W. Hoppes, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner John Mika, according to state police at Schuylkill Haven, who investigated the crash about 400 feet north of Kalmia Road in the township.

Police said he was driving a 2010 Ford Fusion west when he failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. The vehicle left the roadway and traveled onto the south berm, where it impacted a large rock with its left front end.

Police said the force of the impact caused the car to go airborne into a cornfield, after which time is spun 90 degrees in a clockwise direction and impacted the field with its left front. Police said the car barrel-rolled six times before coming to rest in an upright position facing southeast in a cornfield.

Police said Hoppes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The vehicle sustained major damages.
