Storm causes run on generators, gas

With many PPL customers in Monroe and Carbon counties still waiting for their power to be restored, generators have been hard to come by.

Ace Hardware, ShopRite, Home Depot and Lowe’s have had trouble keeping up with demand, even with emergency shipments over the weekend. More than 120,000 PPL customers lost power on Friday due to the storm, and stores throughout the region were packed with customers seeking a temporary power source.

“I had 60 in this morning for an emergency, and they are gone,” Stroudsburg Home Depot assistant manager Liz Ross said on Saturday afternoon. “I have another shipment of 100 due this afternoon.”

As of Monday morning, Lowe’s reported having only one unit available, with a first-come, first-served policy. All of the other retailers had sold out, with no confirmation of upcoming deliveries.

With thousands looking to fill up those generators with fuel, lines at the local gas stations became a common sight.

The Sunoco station on Route 209 and Weir Lake Road had received three truck drop-offs of 20,000 gallons each throughout the weekend, and still managed to sell out of two of the four grades of gasoline.
