Police nab man wanted in Tamaqua shooting

A Hazleton man wanted for an attempted murder in Tamaqua on Oct. 10, 2017, was picked up in Hazleton this morning by the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force and arraigned before District Magisterial Judge Stephen Bayer in Tamaqua.

Rafael Valdez-Torres, 26, allegedly shot Joseph Becker of Tamaqua at 2:07 a.m. after an argument over drug payment.

The shooting took place on Rowe Street. Becker was able to make it to Fegley’s Mini Mart on Center Street for help.

He was airlifted to an Allentown trauma center, where he spent weeks in ICU being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest. Torres faces attempted murder charges, which means any bail must be set by the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas.
