Palmerton Lions serve up a New Year’s Day tradition

Pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day.

Why it is a German tradition, of course. One passed down through the generations. Folklore has it that if you eat the two together on the first day of the year, you will have good fortune throughout the year.

The Palmerton Lions Club continued their tradition of hosting an annual pork and sauerkraut dinner to get the community off to a good start. The members prepared the food in large roasters which were then transported into the Sokol Hall at 452 Lehigh Ave. in Palmerton, where the meal was held. It was open to the public and came with all the trimmings, including homemade desserts.

“I got up this morning at 2 a.m. and started the pork roasts cooking,” said club member Judy Borger.

This is the third year the club has hosted this event.

Last year more than 100 people came and purchased a meal.

This year the club also took carryout orders. Meals were served from noon to 5 p.m.

The dinner was just one of many fundraisers the Lions club holds throughout the year.

The club, which was started in 1954, is a service club. All the money raised will go back to the different volunteer organizations in and around the Palmerton area.

The Palmerton Lions Club has approximately 20 active members who are committed to making a difference in the local communities as well as in the communities worldwide.
