Tobyhanna man resisted arrest

A Tobyhanna man is in jail after being arraigned for refusing to cooperate with police after a traffic stop.

Police say the man is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Jose Lugo Jr., 18, of 5312 Ledgewood Drive, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Muth on that charge, as well as simple assault, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a child, and committed to the Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 bail.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said he was arrested after the stop at midnight Dec. 23 on Route196 near the Carriage Square in Coolbaugh Township.

Police said they stopped Lugo after he was seen driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. The endangerment charge related to him having a juvenile passenger in the vehicle.

Police said Lugo refused to provide them with identification. Police said he rolled up the window of his vehicle and locked its doors, until officers eventually removed him from the vehicle, during which time the man resisted and fought with police. Police said Lugo assumed an aggressive posture towards police, who needed to use a Taser to gain his compliance.
