CCTI joint operating committee reorganizes

Carbon Career & Technical Institute’s joint operating committee had a changing of the guard at the reorganization meeting on Thursday night.

The 2018 committee will consist of Gerald Strubinger, representing Jim Thorpe Area School District; Andrew Yenser, representing Lehighton Area School District; Kathy Fallow, representing Palmerton Area School District; Wayne Gryzik, representing Panther Valley School District; and Chad M. Obert, representing Weatherly Area School District.

Yenser and Fallow were not present at the meeting.

Strubinger was approved as chairman of the committee, with Gryzik serving as vice chairman.

Alternate representatives included Glenn Confer for Jim Thorpe, Stephen L. Holland for Lehighton, Joshua Smale for Palmerton, Justin Foster for Panther Valley and Shay Wagner for Weatherly.

Weatherly Area School District Superintendent Teresa Young was appointed as the superintendent of record for the 2018 calendar year.

Joint operating committee meetings will take place at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month in the CCTI dining room. Executive sessions will be held at 5 p.m.

In other business

• James DeLotto was approved as a substitute van/bus driver for the 2017-18 school year.

• Susan Stermer was approved as a substitute school nurse for the 2017-18 school year.

• Jennifer Gulick, Phillip Strubinger and Dennis Vavra were appointed as homebound instructors for the 2017-18 school year, on an as-needed basis, at the rate of $30 per hour.

• The committee approved 44 students to attend the DECA State Competition from Feb. 21-23 in Hershey at a cost of $6,500 to help reduce the costs of lodging, transportation, meals and registration expenses. The total cost of the trip is listed at $13,678, and each student will be responsible for paying $163.14.

• DECA major adviser Stephanie Barto, DECA assistant Scott Bartholomew, instructional aide Sandi Kohutka, and chaperone William Stoudt were approved to chaperone the 44 students participating in the DECA competition, at a cost of $1,678 for lodging, transportation, meals, and registration expenses.

• The committee also approved 37 cosmetology students to attend the International Beauty Show New York Hair Show on March 6 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, at a cost of $2,633 to cover ticket and transportation expenses. Expenses for the trip were covered by the 2017-18 general fund budget and student fundraisers.

• The following people were approved as members of the CCTI Local Advisory (Participatory Planning) Committee for the 2017-18 school year: Franklin Andreas, Philip Binder, Ron Blisard, John Drury, Ron Fritz, Francine Garenty-Kluck, Kathy Henderson, Marlyn Kissner, Diane Luicana, Toni Macaluso, Candy Madera, Todd Mason, Jaime Mendes, Jeanne Miller, Bill Richards, Joseph Sebelin, Rachel Strucko and Garry Wentz.
