LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Games of Dec. 9

Palmerton’s Lucas Christman, Tamaqua’s Bronson Strouse and Panther Valley’s Hunter Kennedy all picked up tournament championships in wrestling action on Saturday.

In addition, the Marian girls basketball team captured the Lourdes Tip-Off Tournament title.

WRESTLING

Pleasant Valley in

Saucon Valley Tournament

Pleasant Valley had six wrestlers place at the Saucon Valley Tournament.

Daniel Valdner (113) and James Gehr (138) both picked up second place medals for the Bears. Anthony Mazzella (195) finished fourth, Chase Garcia (106) finished fifth, Edward Iandoli (152) was sixth, and Gavin Dorn (160) placed eighth.

Palmerton in

Rough Rider Tournament

Palmerton took part in the Catasauqua Rough Rider season opening tournament and turned in some impressive individual showings.

Lucas Christman paced the Blue Bombers with a first-place at 152-pound weight class. Shawn Gardner (132) and Nate Sterner (160) finished in second place in their respective classes. Matt Lalik took fourth in the 145 class.

Lehighton in

Brandywine Tournament

Lehighton finished in fifth place in the 12-team field at the Sam Lovello Brandywine Heights Wrestling Classic,

Nate Kemmerer at 126, Tyler Shock at 152 and Brett Gasker at 220 all finished in second place in their weight classes to pace the Indians. Chris Whiteman (145) took a third place for the Tribe, who saw 10 wrestlers finish in the top six throughout the event.

Tamaqua in

Bloomsburg Invitational

Tamaqua’s Bronson Strouse had a first place finish at the Darren Klingerman Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Bloomsburg High School,

Strouse recorded a pin in the final of the 220-pound title bou to help the Blue Raiders take fourth place out of 20 teams.

Aaron Coccio (126) finish third, Mike Schlanta (106) took fourth, and Randy Steigerwalt (113) and Brandon Mader (138) both placed fifth for Tamaqua.

Panther Valley in

Athens Tournament

Panther Valley’s Hunter Kennedy went 4-0 and won the 170 pound bracket at the Athens Tournament. Kennedy recorded his 100th career win during the tourney.

The Panthers’ Tanner Kennedy (160) and Aaron Eidem (285) both went 4-1 and placed second.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. Lehigh-Hamburg

In the consolation game of the Hamburg Invitational Tip-Off Tournament, Northern Lehigh took third place with a 54-48 victory over the host Hawks.

Leading the Bulldogs in scoring were Nate Keller and Gio Colon, who both dropped in 14 points. Teammate Brandon Hess added 12.

Tyler Graham put up a game-high 18 points for Hamburg. Corey Evangelista chipped in 14 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-Lourdes

Emily Shaud’s hot hand helped Marian take an early season title in the Lourdes Tip-Off Tournament as the Fillies defeated the tourney hosts, 61-48.

Shaud nailed seven triples in the championship tilt and finished with 33 points. Isabella Schwabe followed with nine points.

For the Red Raiders, Lilly Bickel had 22 points.

Pleasant Valley used a balance scoring attack to breeze to a 55-31 victory over Liberty.

Masani Francis led all scorers with 16 points for the Bears. Cameron Caffrey added nine points.

Lauren King had nine points for the Hurricanes.

A 12-2 third frame proved to be Northern Lehigh’s undoing, as Daniel Boone jacked up their defense to pull away for the 52-41 non-league win.

Kaylie Walker had a team-high 14 points for Boone.

For the Bulldogs, Jada Saeger had a monster game with 29 points, including four triples.

Allen took advantage of a slow start by Northwestern to post a 61-45 victory.

The Canaries managed to keep their opponent off the scoreboard in the first session as they built an 8-0 lead.

Leading the winners in scoring was Kim Andrews with 22 points.

The Tigers received eight points apiece from Gabby Sevrain and Jess Williamson.

SWIMMING

Hazleton-Tamaqua

Hazleton swept Tamaqua, winning the boys meet 107-71 and the girls meet 101-82 on Friday.

Individually, for the Blue Raiders, Billy Shilko finished first in the one-meter diving event, while Jeff Letterhouse nabbed first in the 100 butterfly and Anthony Witczak took first in the 100 freestyle for the boys.

For the Tamaqua girls, Tressa Barron won the one-meter diving competition, while the 200 medley relay team of Lexi Kerstetter, Sarah Maue, Brianna Dumond and Kayla Sherry prevailed in their race.
