A Lehigh Township man is dead after he crashed his vehicle into a tree Wednesday night.

Shane Wechsler, 43, was driving his Nissan Ultima north in the area of 4685 Poplar Drive at 8:50 p.m. when he crashed head-on into a tree in front of that residence, according to township police Chief Scott Fogel.

Fogel said Wechsler was transported to Palmerton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, said Fogel, who added Wechsler was the only occupant.

“There were no skid marks to indicate any unsafe speeds,” Fogel said. “It looked like he literally just drove off the roadway.”

The vehicle’s air bags were deployed, but Wechsler was not wearing his seat belt, he said.

Fogel said they are awaiting toxicology from the coroner’s officer.
