Carbon County court
A Carbon County man admitted in the county court on Friday to assaulting two of his children.
William Patrick Hetherington, 59, of Weatherly, pleaded guilty before Judge Joseph J. Matika to two counts of simple assault for assaulting his son and daughter and one count of terroristic threats.
He was arrested on Sept. 11 when state police at Hazleton responded to 45 Oak Held Road, in Packer Township, for a reported domestic incident. On scene troopers found Hetherington on the floor of the kitchen highly intoxicated.
Through the investigation it was learned that Hetherington had assaulted his son and when his daughter attempted to intervene, he struck her. He also threatened to burn the home down.
Hetherington admitted drinking the day of the incident but claimed he was upset because of alleged activities by his son. At that point Assistant District Attorney Brian Gazo interrupted the defendant, stating Hetherington was before the court for the incidents on Sept. 11 and did not feel it was proper for him to start blaming his son for any of the incident. Matika agreed, saying, “You’re here for the assaults.”
On the two simple assault charges Matika sentenced him to serve three to 12 months in the county prison and one year probation consecutive to the jail term on the threats charge.
Matika also ordered him to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, attend and complete an anger management course, render 50 hours of community service, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation and have no contact with the victims.
He was given credit for 81 days already served in jail on the charges.
