‘Rebel Without a Cause’ opens tonight in Palmerton

Palmerton Area High School’s drama club will put on its fall production, “Rebel Without a Cause,” Thursday through Saturday in the high school auditorium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. each night and the production starts at 7 p.m.

Student admission is $5 and adult admission is $10.

“‘Rebel Without a Cause’ was chosen as this years production because of how relatable it can be and because of the dramatic opportunities it provided for our actors,” said drama club adviser Brent Harris.

“Although it is 62 years old, the characters all come from a very real place, even for today’s students. Most of the cast play parents or teenagers who have important choices to make throughout the play, and more often than not, struggle to find the answers to their dilemmas,” Harris said.

It also highlights the differences in perspective between teenagers and their parents, pointing out that in some cases both sides can have the best intentions but be misunderstood due to their point of view. Our students seem to have connected with this idea.”

Although the show displays a much more extreme and even violent version of teen life, Harris added, he thinks the cast felt that they were able to connect with the show a bit more than other plays where family life can be a bit sugar coated.

Students have been rehearsing for this play since the second week of September.

“I hope that the students gain an appreciation for just how many factors play a role in the perspectives we take on everyday conflicts,” Harris said.

“‘Rebel Without a Cause’ highlights the problems that can occur when we fail to understand another person’s viewpoint,” Harris said.

“After being a part of this production, I think they will be more inclined to stop and think about where another person might be coming from. If they pick up a bit of that patience and understanding, that would be more than I could ask for.”

Harris also hopes the audience thinks about perspectives as well.

“If parents and students alike walk away thinking more about the other’s point of view, then we will have accomplished our goal,” he added.

“We also hope they see just how dedicated these students are to their craft. They have rehearsed countless hours to fine-tune their performances.”
