Woman admits driving drunk with child in vehicle

A Palmerton woman admitted in Carbon County court on Tuesday to driving drunk with a young child in her vehicle.

She entered a guilty plea to driving under the influence charges before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Katelyn Marie McFarland, 26, formerly of Coaldale, was arrested on Aug. 13, 2015, by Nesquehoning police along Railroad Street. At the stop a young child was found in the vehicle. Police responded to the area for a reported hit-and-run accident. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.

McFarland also pleaded in another case to one count of retail theft. She was charged by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store. There is a co-defendant in that case.

McFarland is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charges.

Matika deferred sentencing after he learned the defendant had applied for placement in a long-term drug inpatient rehabilitation facility. He also ordered a presentence investigation report be prepared by the adult probation office.
