Jim Thorpe business alters expansion plans due to water runoff

A Jim Thorpe business that has plans to expand its retail space had to alter the plans slightly after water runoff from a mountain started seeping into the construction zone.

On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission approved the altered plans for the Jim Thorpe Market retail expansion project.

Ivan O. Meixell Jr., county planner, explained the reason for the alteration is because when crews started digging out the bank for the expansion, water coming off the mountain was interfering.

The new plans now call for moving the building forward about 20 feet and also relocating a sewer line.

Initial plans also call for constructing a 5,000-square-foot commercial retail building, which will house a Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits store and beverage store.

Meixell pointed out before the commission recommended approval that the planning commission recommended plan approval in April.

The planning commission also reviewed three additional developments and subdivisions in the county:

• Rockland Energy Inc. received conditional plan rejection for a previously rejected plan that calls for a lot line revision and land development at 85 Interchange Road, Franklin Township. The plans call for constructing a 2,260-square-foot convenience store, but has some areas of noncompliance that still need to be addressed.

• Blue Ridge Real Estate Company received conditional plan rejection for a proposed subdivision at the intersection of the Francis E. Walter Dam Road and Route 940, Kidder Township. The plans call for subdividing 460.01 acres into three lots. No development is proposed.

• Beverly K. Waibel received conditional plan rejection for a proposed subdivision at 4025 West Stage Coach Road, Towamensing Township. Plans call for subdividing 43.263 acres into two lots.
