Teen struck by car, killed in Monroe

A 17-year-old male was struck and killed moments after getting off a bus in Monroe County on Monday.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incident occurred at 8:30 p.m. along Route 196 at Woodside Drive in Coolbaugh Township.

Police said the teen, who police have declined to identify, had exited the Pocono Pony bus and crossed Route 196 when he was struck by a Hyundai Elantra which was southbound. The Elantra was operated by Joaquin Acevedo Soltren, 54, of Tobyhanna.

The teen was flown to Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, were he died of his injuries. The road was closed for about five hours while police conducted an investigation. Police were assisted by Coolbaugh Township Fire Company volunteers and the Pocono Mountain Regional EMS personnel.

The investigation is continuing, Anyone who may have witnesses the incident is asked to call officer Daniel Jones at 570-895-2400.
