Weatherly cheerleaders to raise funds for American Cancer Society

The Weatherly High School varsity cheerleading team is working together in the fight against breast cancer.

On Sunday, the team will host The Weatherly Wrecks Cancer Walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

“My goal as their coach is to get the team out into our community, we don’t just cheer for our school, we cheer for our community,” said Tiffany Bobeck, varsity cheerleading adviser.

Bobeck, who took over as varsity adviser in August, said the idea for the walk came about during a team practice.

“We were talking about how we can get more involved in our community, and I threw out the idea and the team ran with it,” she said.

“Each one of us knows or has known someone who is a fighter, a survivor, or has been taken and we couldn’t think of a better way to honor them. We have been referring to them as our ‘Weatherly Wonder Women.’ ”

The walk will feature a “Weatherly Wonder Woman Wall” where participants can sign or write the names of fighters, survivors or those who have been lost as an honor to their fight against breast cancer. During the walk, the soccer field concession stand will sell drinks while the team sells bracelets and T-shirts. A small bake sale will also take place during the afternoon event. All proceeds raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

“Our goal is to raise awareness and aid in the fight to end breast cancer,” Bobeck said.

The team is working to make this an annual fundraising event under the slogan “Go, Fight, Cure!”

“I like for the team to engage in as many philanthropic opportunities as they can,” she said. “Our program is currently in the rebuilding process.

“The team attended Pine Forest Cheerleading Camp this past summer, and placed in camp competition for the first time in a few years. The girls cheer for varsity basketball, both boys and girls, in the winter, however they work and practice year-round.”

Weatherly senior Julia Hinkle, sophomores Lexi Berger and Kenzie Sherman, along with freshmen Holly Gehman, Maddie Hinkle, Lilli Kunkle and Kelly Royer are this year’s varsity cheerleaders,

“I take great pride in my team,” Bobeck said.

In the past, the team has conducted fundraisers to raise awareness, including, “Tow Away Type-One Diabetes,” along with “Tow it on Home, Homecoming Bonfire” where Bobeck said, “We were able to enjoy a night celebrating our community and school.”

The walk will take place on the school’s cross-country course, beginning on the middle school soccer field.

Registration will take place from 9 to 10:45 a.m., with the walk starting at 11.

“The walk is open to not just our community, but to anyone from surrounding areas who would like to honor their loved ones, or support our fight,” Bobeck said.

Early registration is available by visiting the walk’s Facebook page Weatherly Wrecks Cancer Walk 2017. Check the Facebook page for weather updates.
