Lehighton adds more trees for Christmas in the park

The second annual Lehighton Christmas Trees in the Park event promises to be even bigger this year.

Autumn Abelovsky, secretary of the Lehighton Borough Parks & Recreation Board, said the Community Tree Lighting will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 3.

Abelovsky said the trees will be illuminated day and night throughout December for everyone to stroll through the parks and view.

She said last year’s initial event that was organized by the Lehighton 150th Celebration Committee had 73 trees decorated throughout the upper and lower parks.

“Last year’s inaugural lighting ceremony was such a huge success,” Abelovsky said. “The board received so many compliments on the event, and the requests poured in to make it an annual celebration.”

This year, Abelovsky said the board is planning big, and is looking to have 100 trees light up the town center.

In addition to the 5-foot trees lining the walkways, she said Crystal Spring Tree Farm has donated a 15-foot tree for in front of the Lehighton Amphitheater, as well as decorations for the park fountain.

Abelovsky said the board is looking for local businesses, organizations, groups or families to adopt a holiday tree in the Lehighton Park.

The trees can be decorated the first weekend in December.

“With warm food and drink vendors and holiday music piped throughout the parks, the spirit of the season will be ever so present in the center of town,” she said.

Abelovsky said tree adoptions will be accepted for a $40 donation, and added that tree decorating will be open from Dec. 1-3 during designated hours.

This year’s Community Christmas Celebration is sponsored by Crystal Spring Tree Farm, Next Era Energy, and Lehighton Orioles Nest 183, PDC Spa & Pool World, Service Construction Company, and Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank.

“It was through these sponsorships that the Parks & Recreation Board was able to purchase special electrical cording to make the tree lighting hookups easier and safer,” she said.

All tree decorations must be removed between Jan. 3-5, 2018. Any decorations that are not collected will be discarded by the borough at the time of tree removal by noon, Jan. 5.

Forms to adopt a holiday tree can be found at the Lehighton Borough Municipal Building, the Lehighton Memorial Library, Carbon County Music and More, Old Tyme Corner Store (Seventh and Mahoning) and Deets Cuts & Curl. Forms can also be downloaded from the Park & Recreation Boards Facebook Page at Lehighton Borough Events or at www.LehightonBorough.com.
