Tamaqua news for Oct. 19

Veterans Day

Tamaqua American Legion Post 173 will host its annual Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. at the former Maff Motors building in the 900 block of East Broad Street.

The line of march will head west on Broad Street, dispersing in the area of Lehigh Street.

Leading the parade, behind the Tamaqua American Legion Color Guard, will be parade grand marshal Robert O. Rarick, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Following the parade, a brief service will be held in front of the Legion post at 206 W. Broad St.

Parking will be banned along the parade route.

Parade organizers encourage everyone to be part of the event, either by walking, driving or riding in the parade. All veterans, their family members, individuals, businesses, civic groups, fire companies, youth groups, clubs, organizations, military vehicles and antique car enthusiasts are welcome. Simply show your support by taking part in the parade.

Water meters

The Tamaqua Area Water Authority is installing new water meters to all of its customers. Workers are going street to street alphabetically and are up to the letter C.

Workers have photo IDs.

If a resident is not at home at the time workers visit, they will have the opportunity to schedule the work to be done at their convenience.

Free movie

Zion Lutheran Church will host a free community movie on Oct. 22 as part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Reformation.

The film will be “Luther,” starring Joseph Fiennes portraying Martin Luther, a prominent figure in the Protestant Reformation.

The movie will begin at 4 p.m. There will be free pretzels and birch beer.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class meets at 11:15 a.m., Cub and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, junior choir rehearses at 7 p.m., senior choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Bible study sessions are held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Rally Day is scheduled for Oct. 29.

St. John Lutheran

Guest pastor the Rev. Robert vonFrisch will officiate at this Sunday’s 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, the bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m., Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Thursday, angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.
