Thousands flock to Jim Thorpe’s annual fall festival

Thousands of visitors filled the historic downtown area of Jim Thorpe during the first of three weekends of the 2017 Fall Foliage Festival being held there.

Over the past weekend, the air was filled with music and activity not only in the downtown area but and up and down Broadway and Race Street as well.

Visitors came by car and train by the hundreds to enjoy the festival, which is sponsored by the Jim Thorpe Tourism Agency.

Plenty of food and seating was available in the area of Josiah White Park along with local restaurants throughout downtown Jim Thorpe.

In addition to the arts and crafts vendors at the park, festivalgoers could also visit more than 36 shops and galleries throughout the town and enjoy concerts in one of four stages in the historic district.

Visitors also had the opportunity to enjoy either a 45-minute train ride through the scenic Lehigh Gorge State Park or a two-hour Hometown High Bridge train ride aboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway passenger trains.

In addition to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway passenger trains, the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern steam engine No. 425 brought hundreds of visitors from Reading and Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe, giving festival visitors the opportunity to see both steam and diesel powered passenger trains as well as two unique silver-colored self-propelled rail diesel cars also known as “Buddliners.”

The festival will continue the next two weekends for those who still want to get out and see what Jim Thorpe and the Fall Foliage Festival have to offer. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays on Oct. 14 and 15 and Oct. 21 and 22.
