Despite what seems to be an extended summer season, it’s going to get chilly soon, what with winter is right around the corner.
So what can our area expect in the coming months – a winter wonderland, or maybe something warmer? Depends on who you ask.
“For the Lehighton area, the overall flavor for the winter will be seasonal, pretty normal,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bob Smerbeck said. “October is going to be mild, November and December will probably also be mild compared to the average. January is when the chilly air will move in.”
Smerbeck said that February is a bit of wild card, with some potential for temperatures to climb slightly above normal. However, there is a slight chance that certain winter weather patterns could produce a colder month with more snowfall.
Smerbeck said that one of the important things to note is that this winter will most certainly be different than what we experienced last year. However, that doesn’t rule out some average to above-average precipitation, which AccuWeather is currently calling for.
“One of the things we’re looking at during the end of the winter is whether the jet stream gets into a block pattern,” Smerbeck said. “If we get some blocking in the jet stream, it is possible we could get more chilly air and precipitation. If that happens, there might be above-average precipitation.”
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, however, is calling for a warmer than average winter, with above normal precipitation and below normal snowfall. Their prediction for colder weather mostly matches up with AccuWeather, citing the chilliest times to be in late December, early and mid-January, and early and mid-February.
