A look back: October 4, 1974

The Economic Development Corporation of Northeastern Pennsylvania announced its fundraising effort to save the railroad industry exceeded its $400,000 goal by $11,708 in the seven-county region.

Heading the Carbon County drive were Agnes McCartney, director of the county’s Manpower Development program, and Frances Philip, manager of Lehighton radio station WYNS. The Carbon County goal of $20,000 was easily surpassed under their watch, with $28,620 having been collected here.

Congressman Daniel Flood of Wilkes-Barre was on hand for the press conference announcing the drive results. He congratulated participants for what he called a “marvelous effort.”
