Pet owners reminded to clean up after dogs in Nesquehoning

Nesquehoning residents are reminded that they need to clean up after their dogs.

Mayor Sam Kitchko said that there have been recent complaints of dogs doing their business, but the owner failing to clean it up.

“If we see it happen, we will cite people,” Kitchko said. “This is a reminder.”

According to the borough’s animal ordinance, it is “unlawful for any person to allow excrement from the person’s dog to remain on any public sidewalks, streets, alleys or thoroughfares of the borough of Nesquehoning and it shall be unlawful for any person to fail to remove excrement from the person’s dog from any public sidewalks, streets, alleys or thoroughfares of the borough of Nesquehoning.”

A dog owner who is caught not cleaning up after their dog or being in a park that is posted no dogs can be cited and fined.

Other business

Council announced the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday:

• In July and August, the borough police collected $5,329.09; issued 63 citations; had 1,019 incidents reported; and drove 6,080 miles while on patrol.

• Trick-or-treat night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. There is no rain date.

• Council is looking for a representative for the Dimmick Memorial Library Board to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William Santore Jr. Letters of interest are being accepted at the borough hall, 114 W. Catawissa St.

• The borough recreation commission is also looking for new members. Anyone interested in serving on the commission can send a letter of interest to the borough hall.

• The Nesquehoning Ambulance responded to 13 calls for the month of August and traveled 253 miles. Year-to-date, the ambulance responded to 230 calls and traveled 3,361 miles.

• Nesquehoning Fire Company responded to 10 calls in August and 100 for the year.

• The New Columbus Fire Company generator, which was damaged earlier this year, has been replaced and a new propane tank installed. The borough will pay to fill the propane tank and the fire company will top off the tank as needed to ensure the generator works in case of an emergency since the fire company is an emergency shelter.
