Dumping of grease into sewer system under review

There’s a grease issue in Lehighton that is costing the borough money and needs to be dealt with, according to one borough official.

Borough councilwoman Helen Torok said at Monday’s borough council meeting that there is a problem with the dumping of grease into the sanitary sewer system.

Torok said the issue is costing the borough money, and will continue to cost to the borough money.

“It’s a very serious problem,” Torok said. “There is tons of grease in the sewer.”

After the meeting, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said she took a visit to the Central Carbon Municipal Authority for a tour of the facilities.

Beckett said, “The grease is definitely visible and is an issue at the plant.”

“I had discussed the issue with the supervisor and their process for removing the grease from the system,” Beckett said. “I will be discussing the issue further with Council along with Code Enforcement.”
