Allentown man withdraws guilty plea, opts for trial in drug case

An Allentown man who was to plead guilty to drug charges in Carbon County court will instead face trial.

Edilberto Ortiz Jr., 32, on Thursday withdrew his guilty plea and asked for his case instead to go to trial.

Judge Steven R. Serfass, after listening to Ortiz’s reasons, agreed.

Ortiz was concerned about a charge he said he did not know was included. He blamed his lawyer, Nicholas A. Quinn, for the mix-up.

Ortiz said he wanted to fire Quinn and hire a new attorney,

Quinn said he had explained everything to his client.

Ortiz and six others were charged in June 2016 by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General with distributing significant quantities of crystal methamphetamine in Carbon and Lehigh counties between January and March 2016.

He was charged with five counts of delivery or possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, two counts each of corrupt organizations and possession of a controlled substance and one count each of criminal conspiracy and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity.

Ortiz was a main distributor who supplied six people with methamphetamine. Those people later redistributed the drugs to their customers, according to court documents.

More than 4 pounds of methamphetamine was seized from a house where Ortiz was staying, according to the documents.

Also seized in that search was a .32-caliber handgun, roughly $2,400 in cash and drug paraphernalia.

Searches of other residences resulted in the seizure of various quantities of methamphetamine, cash, digital scales and drug paraphernalia.

The others are Holly Ann Eckhart, 51, Palmerton; Richard E. Moyer, 58, Lehighton; Robert David Rex, 60, Lansford; Susan Annette Rex, 58, Nesquehoning; Connie Serfass, 61, Lehighton; and Donna Marie Ziegenfuss, 55, Palmerton.
