A look back: September 29, 1962

The decision on whether Marie Mayer of Palmerton will continue as secretary to Carbon County Civil Defense Director William Schmidt will be announced at the county commissioners meeting on Oct. 3.

Mayer, informed that her services are to be terminated unless she complies with a Civil Service directive to take a qualifying examination for the position, has indicated her decision will be contained in a letter to the three-man board.

Should she elect to take the examination and subsequently win qualification, she would be obliged to resign as vice chairman of the Republican Party, since regulations prohibit affiliation in partisan politics.
