Police investigate Schuylkill crashes

State police at Frackville reported investigating three crashes on Sunday on Schuylkill County roadways.

The first crash was reported at 5:24 a.m. along Brockton Mountain Road in Ryan Township. Troopers said Vaughn E. Smulligan, 22, of New Philadelphia, was driving a 2003 Dodge Neon southbound when he swerved to avoid a deer on the roadway. He lost control of the vehicle which went onto the west berm and struck a tree head-on.Smulligan was not injured but the Neon was towed from the scene.The second crash occurred at 4:22 p.m. along Route 61 in New Castle Township. Charle Diferdinando, 23, of Shenandoah, was driving a 1994 Honda Civic northbound and rounding a right curve when the vehicle left the roadway. It traveled onto a dirt/rock embankment on the west side before flipping onto its roof and landing back on the roadway.Diferdinando was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-East, Pottsville. Troopers cited Diferdinando for inadequate tires.The third crash was reported at 5:02 p.m. at the intersection of Route 209 and Catawissa Road in Schuylkill Township. Troopers said a 16-year-old female from Mahanoy City was operating a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse eastbound on Catawissa Road while William W. McNavage, 60, of Coaldale, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina northbound on 209. Troopers said the teen failed to yield at a posted stop sign and attempted to cross 209 and struck the Lumina with the front of the Traverse.The teen and her passengers, two males, ages 16 and 17, and a female 15, were all from Mahanoy, and all not injured. McNavage had a suspected minor injury that did not require immediate medical attention.Both vehicles had to be towed.The teen was cited for stop/yield sign violation.
